2021 Climate Action Internship Report
2021 Climate Action Internship Report
Learning Environmental Action, SDGs, Agroforestry and International Cooperation
In 2021, Helping Hands and Hearts Japan carried out a climate action internship in which student interns learned about climate change, environmental issues, SDGs, Typhoon Haiyan, and agroforestry in Leyte Island, Philippines.
The interns planned, prepared and held an online workshop for young participants. Through the activity, they studied climate change, created presentation materials, wrote scripts, organized the workshop structure and communicated the importance of environmental action and international cooperation.
Overview of the 2021 Activity
The 2021 climate action internship was a practical learning activity focused on environmental issues, climate change and international cooperation. Student interns learned about climate change and prepared an online workshop to share their learning with younger participants.
The activity was connected to HHAHJ’s long-term agroforestry-related activities in Leyte Island, Philippines. By studying typhoon damage, greenhouse gases, SDGs and agroforestry, the interns explored how environmental action can support both local communities and the global environment.
Learning Climate Change through Practical Preparation
The interns first learned about the causes and impacts of climate change. They studied greenhouse gases, global warming, extreme weather, typhoon damage and the importance of climate action.
They then connected these topics to the Philippines, especially Leyte Island, where past typhoon damage and environmental challenges made climate action a concrete and urgent issue.
From Environmental Issues to International Cooperation
The workshop preparation helped the interns understand that climate change is not only a scientific topic, but also a human and community issue. The activity connected environmental education, disaster recovery, agriculture, local livelihoods and international cooperation.
Main Activity Contents
The 2021 internship included research, planning, content creation, presentation preparation and online workshop implementation.
Learning about Climate Change
The interns studied climate change, greenhouse gases and the impacts of global warming. They also considered how these issues affect people’s lives and communities.
- Climate change and global warming
- Greenhouse gases and environmental impact
- Extreme weather and typhoon damage
- How climate change affects communities
Research on Leyte Island and Typhoon Damage
The interns learned about the Philippines and the damage caused by typhoons, especially in relation to Leyte Island. This helped them understand the connection between climate risks and local communities.
- Research on Leyte Island, Philippines
- Learning about typhoon damage
- Understanding disaster recovery and community resilience
- Connecting environmental issues with international cooperation
SDG 13 and Climate Action
The interns studied SDG 13, which focuses on climate action. They prepared messages to explain why climate action is important for young people and local communities.
- Learning about SDG 13
- Explaining climate action in an accessible way
- Connecting SDGs with daily life and community action
- Preparing content for young participants
Agroforestry as a Practical Response
The workshop introduced agroforestry as one practical way to respond to climate change. The interns learned how agriculture, trees, soil, livelihood support and environmental conservation can be connected.
- Understanding agroforestry
- Learning how trees and agriculture can work together
- Connecting environmental conservation with local livelihoods
- Introducing agroforestry as climate adaptation
Workshop Planning and Preparation
The interns did not only learn about climate change. They also created the structure of the workshop, prepared slides, wrote scripts and thought about how to communicate difficult environmental topics to participants in an understandable way.
Research
The interns researched climate change, SDGs, typhoon damage, Leyte Island and agroforestry.
Workshop Design
They organized the workshop flow so that participants could understand the issue step by step.
Materials and Script Creation
They created presentation slides and scripts to explain climate change and agroforestry clearly.
Online Presentation
They presented the workshop online and shared their learning with young participants.

What the Interns Learned
Through this internship, the students learned not only about climate change, but also about how to communicate social issues to others. They experienced the process of turning research into a workshop that participants could understand.
Understanding Climate Change as a Social Issue
The interns learned that climate change is not only an environmental topic, but also a social issue connected to disasters, agriculture, livelihoods and community resilience.
- Understanding climate change impacts
- Connecting science with human lives
- Learning about climate risks in the Philippines
Communicating Difficult Topics Clearly
The interns learned how to explain complex topics such as greenhouse gases, SDGs and agroforestry in ways that younger participants could understand.
- Creating clear presentation materials
- Writing understandable scripts
- Thinking from the audience’s perspective
Learning through Project Creation
By planning and holding a workshop, the interns experienced how a project is created from research, preparation, teamwork and communication.
- Planning a workshop structure
- Preparing slides and speaking notes
- Delivering an online learning event
Connecting Local Action and Global Issues
The activity helped interns understand how local learning and small actions can connect to global issues such as climate change and sustainable development.
- Connecting Japan and the Philippines
- Understanding international cooperation
- Learning about action for a sustainable future
Meaning for HHAHJ
The 2021 climate action internship was important for HHAHJ because it connected youth learning, environmental education, international cooperation and agroforestry-related activities.
By allowing students to research, prepare and communicate the issue themselves, HHAHJ created an opportunity for young people to understand climate change as something connected to real communities and future action.
From Learning to Communication
This internship shows how students can move from learning about social and environmental issues to communicating them to others. It also shows how NPO activities can become practical learning opportunities for the next generation.
