2021 Climate Action Internship Report
Learning Environmental Action, SDGs, Agroforestry and International Cooperation
In 2021, Helping Hands and Hearts Japan carried out a climate action internship in which student interns learned about climate change, environmental issues, SDGs, Typhoon Haiyan, and agroforestry in Leyte Island, Philippines.
The interns planned, prepared and held an online workshop for young participants. Through the activity, they studied climate change, created presentation materials, wrote scripts, organized the workshop structure and communicated the importance of environmental action and international cooperation.
The 2021 climate action internship was a practical learning activity focused on environmental issues, climate change and international cooperation. Student interns learned about climate change and prepared an online workshop to share their learning with younger participants.
The activity was connected to HHAHJ’s long-term agroforestry-related activities in Leyte Island, Philippines. By studying typhoon damage, greenhouse gases, SDGs and agroforestry, the interns explored how environmental action can support both local communities and the global environment.
The interns first learned about the causes and impacts of climate change. They studied greenhouse gases, global warming, extreme weather, typhoon damage and the importance of climate action.
They then connected these topics to the Philippines, especially Leyte Island, where past typhoon damage and environmental challenges made climate action a concrete and urgent issue.
The workshop preparation helped the interns understand that climate change is not only a scientific topic, but also a human and community issue. The activity connected environmental education, disaster recovery, agriculture, local livelihoods and international cooperation.
The 2021 internship included research, planning, content creation, presentation preparation and online workshop implementation.
The interns studied climate change, greenhouse gases and the impacts of global warming. They also considered how these issues affect people’s lives and communities.
The interns learned about the Philippines and the damage caused by typhoons, especially in relation to Leyte Island. This helped them understand the connection between climate risks and local communities.

Through this internship, the students learned not only about climate change, but also about how to communicate social issues to others. They experienced the process of turning research into a workshop that participants could understand.

This internship shows how students can move from learning about social and environmental issues to communicating them to others. It also shows how NPO activities can become practical learning opportunities for the next generation.
